Innovation has nothing to do with how many R&D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R&D. It’s not about money. It’s about the people you have, how you’re led, and how much you get it.

Why Choose Me

With almost 40 years of legal experience working in information technology and corporate finance, I can help you. I have accumulated a unique depth of legal experience in information technology intensive industries.

I practise law as though I am your in-house legal counsel. I see my role as being collaborative and having a vested interest in your success. I strive to provide you with only what you need and to not "over lawyer" your file. My objective is to position you legally for success while getting the best value within your legal budget.

I also do business differently. I have structured my practise for efficiency, personal service and low overhead. I do not typically wear a suit and tie. And I definitely do not have a mahogany panelled boardroom.

I do not charge for disbursements like photocopies and postage.

I do not employ junior lawyers to work on your file. And I do not bill extra if I come to you.

In short, if you come to me for advice, you can count on me being the person to deliver it.

My aim is to provide you with an integrated solution to your legal needs. And, if it turns out that you need help beyond my areas of expertise (for example litigation or patents), then I will refer you to other specialized consultants.

And when things don't go as you planned, you can call on my decades of legal experience (I have negotiated a deal or two…) to help you out of a bad situation.

I am also a trained mediator and a member of Mediate BC, the society regulating mediators in British Columbia.

I understand that for me to succeed, you have to be successful. I guess that says it all.

"...he's a genuine pleasure to do business with -- friendly, no-nonsense, and able to translate legal concepts into accessible language."

Gary graduated from the University of Alberta Law School in 1975 at the age of 23 with his LLB. Gary articled with Warner & Thompson (thank you, Bill Thompson, for the best articles that one could ever have). Gary has practised in British Columbia for almost 40 years. Gary has an undergraduate degree in Arts with a major in both political science and history, and a minor in sociology. He is also a registered Trade-Mark Agent.

Gary restricts his practice to e-commerce, software and databases, Information Technology, the Internet, telemedicine and related employment, technology and intellectual property law matters for start-ups and expanding businesses. He also does corporate finance and mergers and acquisition work for start-ups and companies seeking to expand their businesses.

Before restricting his practise in 1995, Gary practised corporate and commercial law with an emphasis on securities law. During that time he was active in managing the mid-sized firm he was previously with, including acting as managing partner and participating in training less experienced lawyers.

Over the course of his career, Gary has been a frequent speaker on matters relating to these areas for Continuing Legal Education and other organizations and a sessional lecturer at University of British Columbia. He has also been a member of both the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar Association, the Chair of the Pacific Rim Computer and Internet Law Association, and a director of charitable organizations.

Clients can call on Gary's broad range of experience. This includes several years as managing partner of a mid-sized firm, over fifteen years practising securities law and a busy practice advising everyone from start-ups and growing businesses to large corporations on the unique issues they encounter.

Gary's experience, ability to listen, and practical approach enables him to provide multi-disciplined solutions to his client's problems. He facilitates his client's business goals in the face of the considerable legal and business ambiguity encountered in global information technology and e-commerce.

And if the need arises, he is able through negotiations, mediation and referral to help his clients resolve their disputes and avoid costly litigation.
